Locavore extends to Bay Area Sports Apparel

The SF Giants had a big win last Sunday, making it to the playoffs for the first time in 7 years. Tonight they are playing the Atlanta Braves. Got your shirts? Check out Mayberry Workshop, started by our very own Concreteworks Project Manager, Adam Mayberry and his brother Benjamin.

Mayberry Workshop makes original designs that play off the culture of the sports teams in the Bay Area. They currently have 12 different designs for sale on their website featuring different local teams – not just baseball. The most popular shirts right now are “Bay Area Die Hards” and “Big Time Timmy Jim,” a reference to star pitcher Tim Lincecum in an ESPN commercial. The shirts are printed locally at Free Gold Watch in San Francisco.

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Adam and Benjamin Mayberry started their small venture a few years ago out of their love for design and local sports teams. Designers by trade, they saw a need for good quality design in fan based apparel, AND the opportunity to make people aware of the freelance work they do in architecture and graphic design.

MW is gearing up for hockey season and will have women’s Sharks t-shirts in a couple weeks. Mayberry Workshop is also making new Concreteworks t-shirts.

Concreteworks at Columbia University

Mark Rogero is back in Oakland after lecturing at Columbia University. Keith Kaseman, architect and professor in the Architecture, Planning and Preservation Department, asked Mark to be a guest lecturer for the seminar + workshop he’s teaching this semester called ‘Concrete Obsessions.’ Students have been required to cast one form per week researching process, investigating finishes, textures, dimensional properties, concrete mixes, behaviors and utility of concrete casting….all captured on the class blog. It was a great opportunity for students to get feedback on their semester long projects. Mark also had a chance to discuss our most recent work and experiments, as well as the day-to-day activities that take place in our Oakland studio.

Mark and Keith have worked together on several projects including the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial.

Twitter HQ Takes Flight

Excited Twitter employees moved into their new HQ office a few weeks ago designed by Sara Morishige Williams. Impressed by the bright colors, simple concept, and the sensation to take flight, our very own Mark Rogero describes the space as “fresh thinking.” Inspired by a photograph of hundreds of crows both huddled together on the ground and taking off over the landscape, Sara has incorporated the Twitter Mascot’s cousin, the crow into the design. Sara brings the outdoors in, by using a different graphic representation of the Twitter bird and ignites a flying frenzy on the walls and also the Concreteworks conference tables at Twitter. It was a fun collaboration with Sara and also Mike Clark, who made the bases clad with reclaimed barn wood. The 20 foot long surface encases soaring white crows.

Concreteworks Jenner Lounge on HGTV

The HGTV film crew visited the Concreteworks Oakland Studio a while back to shoot an episode of the new series Superscapes starring host and landscape designer Gary Gragg. In typical Hollywood style they filmed both the beginning and the end of the episode in the same day. Schedule to air this summer, the show will feature the making and installation of the Jenner Lounge.

Concreteworks at Margarido House – Northern California’s First LEED-H Platinum Home

In January, the Margarido House was awarded certification of LEED-H Platinum by the US Green Building Council, making it the first Platinum home in Northern California. Special thanks to Mark Rogero and the Concreteworks team for all their participation. Concreteworks sustainable solutions include countertops with 85% recycled content, exterior flatwork with 40% flyash, planters and the Concreteworks signature Jenner Lounge.

Concreteworks at 290 Mulberry , NoLita, NYC

Concreteworks is honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with SHoP Architects at the 290 Mulberry Project in New York City’s NoLita District. Currently under construction, Concreteworks is in the final phases of fabricating the custom bathtubs and sinks for both the master and guest suites in each of the 9 units. The building, across the street from the famous Puck Building, is architecturally significant for may reasons but most notably it’s award winning rippled panelized precast concrete facade system which plays on the historic use of brick elsewhere in the neighborhood. We’re sure the Concreteworks tubs and sinks will be award winning as well so stay tuned for photos of the finished project.
